Our Mission

The mission of the West Alexander Presbyterian Church is to spread the Good News of the Gospel by reaching out into our community and beyond and to provide an environment that encourages the development of faith in and the knowledge of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Our Vision

Our vision is to enable our members to live out their faith in our day-to-day lives and to act as witnesses to Jesus Christ and the Word. It is our intent to fortify, encourage, teach, strengthen, and to support one another through fellowship and prayer in order to reach out to the unchurched, those in need, and our community in general.

We value:

1. Our faith

2. Open dialogue with respect to all

3. Our children and their Christian development

4. Growth, expansion, and the spiritual health of our membership

5. Social justice

6. Service to our community

7. Education and study

8. Fellowship with one another

9. Being open to God's leading

10. Family and tradition

Our History

The first church in West Alexander was the Presbyterian Church. The church was here before it was considered a town. In the journal of Col. John May, who traveled through this part of the state in August of 1788, is found the following: "In the course of a day's ride I saw a little box, something like a sentry box, near the side of the road, but several miles from any house. I could see this standing on four posts. I was told on inquiry that it was a pulpit and to that spot people went to worship the God of Jacob." This crude pulpit is gone, but a granite monument, erected in 1936, now marks the spot where the West Alexander Presbyterian Church had its beginning.

The original National Pike ran through the center of town right past the church. A tollhouse outside the town made this a main route for transporting goods and for settlers traveling west.
