Our Statement of FaithWe, the congregation of the United Presbyterian Church of Claysville, believe that Jesus is Lord and that the church is Christ's body. We are bound by His authority and are free to live in the joyous grace of God. Our vision as members of the church is as follows:
The photo you see above is our lovely 'Small Town' Church. The year 1903 is carved in the cornerstone near the top steps beside our front door. It has been 182 years since the Rev. Thomas Hoge organized this (then) Presbyterian Church in the summer of 1820. Our first meetings were held just west of town in a part-frame, part-log structure until 1830, when a permanant church was built on the present site. That one-room brick building seated about 300 people and was built at the cost of $2000! The present Claysville United Presbyterian Chruch grew out of a 1972 merger of the congregation of this church and the Greene Street United Presbyterian Church, formerly called the South Buffalo Church. You are welcome to read more about both churches on two websites: http://home.att.net/~claypres http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~ebgschol/ |
